Character Canon: My Adventures with Superman
Link to History: The Wiki wasn't completed past the first few episodes of the show, so I'll summarize here.

MAWS sticks very closely to the traditional Superman origin story, but with a few updates. To escape the destruction of the planet Krypton, infant Kal-El is placed in a spaceship by his parents and ends up crashing on Earth, where he is raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent on their farm in Smallville, Kansas.

At the age of eight, the boy, named Clark by his adoptive parents, begins to develop superpowers. He saves a mother and child from a car crash near the farm, jumps into a tall tree to get his kite back, and discovers he can fly within the same few days. His parents show him the spaceship he arrived in, which projects a hologram of a man speaking in a strange alien language. Frightened, Clark stays away from the ship and desperately tries to maintain his humanity.

The series then fast-forwards to fifteen years later, where Clark, now a new college graduate, is starting an internship with the newspaper The Daily Planet. He shares an apartment with his best friend, Jimmy Olsen, who is also an intern. The two meet Lois Lane, who has been interning several months longer than them, and she ropes them in to investigations that they are technically not supposed to be working on.

On one of these investigations, the trio comes across robots that were stolen from a military warehouse. Clark disguises himself and uses his powers to protect his friends from the robots, and Lois pivots her focus to finding out who the mysterious "Superman" who saved them really is.

Throughout the next few episodes, Clark returns to the farm to get more information about the spaceship, receives a suit he can use to fight crime in, and poorly attempts to keep his identity secret from his friends. By the midpoint of the season, both Jimmy and Lois have figured out who he is, and Clark and Lois confess their romantic feelings for each other.

In the last arc of the season, the US military, specifically a team led by General Sam Lane, Lois' father, go after Superman, fearing that he is another soldier sent by the alien force that attempted to invade Earth 22 years ago. They set a trap allowing them to catch Superman, where he is interrogated and tortured. There, Clark learns about "Zero Day," when the Kryptonians sent troops to Earth through a portal and almost launched a war. They were only stopped when their portal was cut off, leaving behind weapons and armor that the US government repurposed for their own use.

In the final episode of the season, Clark deals with the aftermath of his torture and the realization that the surviving Kryptonians are attempting to get back to Earth and complete their invasion. He struggles internally knowing that the place of his birth and the place he calls home are destined for conflict and resolves to stop it.

★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills: - Empathy
- Deductive reasoning
- Machine repair work
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism (lol)
Canon Abilities: Powers and Abilities
Role: Legend
Role Qualities/Attributes: He will look like his normal self most of the time, but occasionally, golden wings will appear. When he's experiencing strong emotions, his eyes will glow a sharp electric blue.
Role Reasoning: It seems obvious to make a superhero into a Legend, but I want to go beyond the surface level and delve into what makes someone 'good.' Clark is trying to reconcile his pacifist upbringing with the warrior culture of his birthplace. He wants to Be Good because it's the right thing to do, but is he fighting against his heritage to be a conqueror? Essentially, I'm interested in exploring the classic Nature vs. Nurture debate and how Clark can overcome those issues to reach his true potential as the beacon of hope he's known as in other iterations.

Additionally, Clark is struggling with controlling his emotions since his powers manifested. This has increased since his torture at the hands of the military towards the end of the first season.

★ Personality ★

I chose Option 2.

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What experience challenged your character's core beliefs? How did they handle this or change from it?

  • When Superman was taken into custody by the military, he was shown footage of what happened during the events of Zero Day. He saw the attempted Kryptonian invasion that led to the deaths of dozens of soldiers before the portal was closed. Up until that point, he had insisted that he was only using his powers for good and that was what he was meant for.

After seeing the footage, Clark no longer knows what his purpose is. While he's been raised to be a helper, there's a possibility he might have been sent to Earth as a sleeper agent, readying the planet for the invading army's return. That causes him to shut down and push his loved ones away, for fear that he'll hurt them.

Through talking to Lois and Jimmy, Clark is reassured that he is "a person, not a weapon," and that he can decide his own destiny. Clark resolves to fight against the Kryptonians if they invade again and to protect his adopted home. His strong support system gets him through his breakdown and he's able to use the faith the citizens have in him to stop the villain Parasite from destroying Metropolis.

  • What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?

  • There's a reason one of Superman's nicknames is the Big Blue Boy Scout. His moral code is built into everything he does - from rescuing cats out of trees to offering to sacrifice himself for humanity. His adoptive parents imparted values like kindness, humility, respect, and fairness that Clark takes seriously.

Clark has an extreme amount of empathy for those around him and even feels compassion for his enemies. He prefers not to fight and will try to talk his way out of conflict. He has an incorruptible spirit and cannot be 'tempted' to the dark side. Even when he's overwhelmed in a battle, his focus will be on protecting civilians over his own safety.

  • Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind?

  • Clark is devoted to peaceful resolution before anything else, and absolutely will forgive those who have wronged him, even supervillains. If an enemy is truly remorseful, he believes them and is willing to give them a second chance. Clark sees the good in people where others may not.

This does mean he's somewhat prone to being gullible. When one of the members of the supervillain group Intergang comes to him for help, saying that he's been forced to commit crimes against his will, Superman attempts to help him and walks right into a trap. Clark doesn't hold any animosity towards the member for lying and even saves him from almost getting hit by a truck.

In the series, he hasn't yet come across anyone who might cause him to change his mind, but the possibility is out there.

  • What is your character's safespace? When do they feel the most settled and comfortable? When do they feel confident and relaxed?

  • Clark's safespace is his childhood home - the farm he grew up on in Smallville, Kansas. Here, he was raised by two loving parents who instilled their values and beliefs into him. Farming involves lots of routines, which Clark finds comforting and expected. He never complains about doing chores and making himself useful.

The farm is also far enough removed from civilization that he's not constantly overwhelmed by his enhanced senses, like his super-hearing. He can fly without anyone seeing him (except for the one time he made the news at age 8), and he doesn't have to worry about accidentally using his powers in front of strangers.

He also retreats to the farm when his life as a hero gets to be too much. His parents are his sounding boards for all his troubles, whether they are related to living on his own for the first time or the supervillains that are starting to pop up around Metropolis.

  • What famous folklore, legend, or myth would you associate your character with? Are they literally inspired by Snow White? Do they have similar struggles or energy as Red Riding Hood?

  • While not done intentionally by the comic's creators, Superman's story has a lot in common with the Biblical story of Moses. An infant is sent away by his family to escape danger. He is found by people from another culture and raised among them, believing himself to be one of them.

As an adult, he learns of his true heritage and is torn between two worlds. He then uses the powers and abilities that have been granted to him to help the weak and oppressed and punish their oppressors. He also has to deal with the realization that everyone is now depending on him to rescue them and solve all their problems, and has to reconcile the fact that he can't be all things to all people.
